Phuket located approximately 862 kilometers south of Bangkok and known is pearl of the Andaman,  Phuket also Thailand’s largest island is also it second smallest province covering an area of approximately 570 square kilometers(including 31 small islets). Thailand. Phuket is mostly mountainous with a mountain range in the west of the island from the north to the south. To the north is the Pahk Prah Channel with Phang Nga Province on the other side. The two provinces are connected by two bridges right next to each other. Since the early 1980’ the tourist business has been Phuket’s chief source of income. Hotels, restaurants, tour companies, and souvenir shops are much in evidence on the west coast. Agriculture remains important to a large number of people, and covers by far the largest acreage of the island. Principle crop, Forest, rubber and palm oil plantations cover 60% of Phuket, coconuts, cashews and pineapples, Prawn farming, pearl farming, Phuket’s fishing port is at all time filled and the processing of marine products. With so many healthy industries supplying income, the building industry has also become a major factor in employment. Construction encompasses massive public works projects, large office buildings and hotels, housing, estates with hundreds of units, single luxury or family homes and many apartments and condominiums.

Phuket is the wealthiest province in Thailand. The island’s wealth means that is has an excellent infrastructure, great road, world class hospitals, schools, shopping-centers and all of the other comforts you have come to expect from a western lifestyle.

It also has the highest cost a person living of any Thai province, although it’s still very affordable by western standards and even a modest income from home can make you a person of leisure here. Phuket’s location in the Andaman Sea has made it a home for foreigner and there are plenty of service available to make it easy to relocated to Phuket. Whether for a season, afew yeas or to retire.

There are two international hospitals in Phuket; Bangkok Phuket Hospital and Phuket International Hospital. Both hospitals are located in the center of Phuket and are full service hospitals. Health Requirements

Most credit cards are widely accepted in department stores, major hotels, up-market shops and restaurants. They can also be used for cash advances at banks and exchange counters.

The electric current for the whole of Thailand is 220 volts AC, 50 cycles. Dual-prong rounded plugs as well as flat-pin plugs can be used in sockets.

Safety & Security
Thailand is a safe country, but like anywhere in the world, it is wise to be a little cautious. Simple safety precautions such as ignoring touts, keeping away from trouble areas, not wearing excessive jewellery, being careful when crossing roads (remember: left-hand traffic!) and taking care of valuables will keep you out of trouble. Valuables such as money, passports and flight tickets are best kept in the safety box of your hotel.

Getting around
There are ordinary taxis as well as "Tuk-Tuks" available over the entire island of Phuket. The prices are mostly agreed in advance between you and the driver. Normally the taxi stand should have a sign with fixed prices to different places. If you are going far, it might be a good idea to arrange for pick up with the same driver that took you to your destination.

Beaches & sight seeing

Kata Beach is the most child friendly beach of the three, but both Kata Beach and Karon Beach offer a number of water activities and food and beverage outlets. The next large beach is Patong Beach, crowded and full of life. Further north comes Kamala Beach, Surin Beach, Bang Tao Beach, Layan Beach, Naithon Beach and all the way up north Nai Yang Beach and Maikhao Beach. There are also a number of small, rather isolated beaches from south to north. Some of them you can only reach by boat; Ya Nui Beach, Jungle Beach, Freedom Beach, Paradise Beach, Laem Singh Beach to mention a few.

Night life
Patong is without a doubt the centre of the island’s nightlife scene. Bars in Patong can be roughly divided into beer bars, go-go bars and regular bars (which don’t have ladies for take out) The scene in Patong is centre around Bangla road and many offshoots.

Long term Stay
The lure of tropical living coupled with the variety of employment opportunities and western-style amenities, means many foreigners are choosing to reside in Phuket permanently.  The lower cost of living in Thailand means expats can enjoy a higher standard of living, and as the number of overseas residents increases, so do the housing options available to them.

Long Term lease
Many properties are available able for long term rental, from the ridiculously cheap to the phenomenally expensive. Prices in the tourist areas will be higher and will get progressively lower as you move away from the coast and towards the more rural areas.  In the town along the west coast which see many visitors during high season, furnished apartments at the lower end of the market will start around 10,000 bt per month, Further in land in the less commercial areas of towns, you can find single roomed apartments from 3,000 and houses from 10,000 baht per month. Buying/ Own Property
Buying a property in Thailand is made by the law which states that no non-Thai citizens can own land in Thailand, nor claim any legal of ownership to the land. However, this has not perturbed a growing number of foreigners who are finding loop-holes in the law to make options available to foreigners wishing to invest in property in Thailand.

Foreigners are legally allowed to buy and own condos, as long as foreign ownership of the entire block does not exceed 40%. Many developers are exploiting this niche in the market and many imposing and  grandiose condominium developments are spring up across the island. Most of these are offering 100% foreigner freehold ownership.

Land leases
Although foreigners cannot legally own any land, they can legally own a building. Long term land rentals are available for 30 years (however, this is a new law in Thailand and therefore the renewal of a 30 year lease has yet to be tried and tested). Many foreigners are choosing a long term land lease, building their house and simply paying the monthly rent for the land. Should the owner of the land wish to break the contract before the end of the lease, they are required to buy the property which sits on the land at full market value, at the end of the 30 or 60 year period.
